An
Illustrated Card Set Presenting the
Findings of the Small Group Discussions with Community Residents
An illustrated set of 8x10 cards was prepared to give back the collective knowledge generated through the small group discussions (SGDs) to the people who live and work in the four demonstration communities. This set of 139 cards is now available to the general public in English and Spanish in PDF format. In addition to the illustrated card set and personal checklists described below, the knowledge generated through the SGDs was used to prepare action-oriented reports and practical tools to enable households, work places, schools and early childhood/youth programs, and governments to make sheltering in place possible and to make protective home isolation possible. If you want your household, organization, or community to be prepared to respond effectively to shelter-in-place emergencies and deadly infectious disease outbreaks, look at these products, too. Overview of the Illustrated Card Set The illustrated card set, What Makes Protection Possible? Looking at Emergencies Through the Eyes of Community Residents in the Redefining Readiness Demonstration Sites, presents the collective insights of almost 2,000 people - from diverse places and backgrounds - who need to be protected in emergencies. The cards are grouped in three sections: (1) What is Redefining Readiness? (2) What Makes Sheltering in Place Possible? (3) What Makes Protective Home Isolation Possible? The sections dealing with sheltering in place and protective home isolation begin with introductory cards (coded in green) that describe what the protective strategy is, when (and for whom) the strategy would be beneficial, and the particular emergency scenario that the SGD participants considered. The cards that follow present the problems that discussion participants said they would face trying to protect themselves in that way (coded in red) as well as the actions that they and others in the community could take to address those problems (coded in blue). The action cards have icons summarizing who would be taking the actions on the card (individuals or households; neighborhood networks or organizations; work sites; schools or child care; and/or government). To make the information accessible to a broad range of audiences, the ideas on each card are illustrated with photographs and other visual images. By using the personal checklists, users of the cards can identify what their household would face if they needed to protect themselves by sheltering in place or isolating themselves at home. For text versions of the SGD findings and practical tools to enable households, organizations, and governments to take action on the findings, see Preparing to Shelter in Place and Preparing for Deadly Contagious Disease Outbreaks. |
